Beyond the Classroom Our Park Seed Experiments

Our Seed Experiments

We are so excited to start our Orchard Harvest curriculum from Mother Goose Time! With it being officially fall, I expected to wake up to 55 degree weather and a chill in the air.

Ok, that didn’t happen and realistically I probably will only get a couple nice fall days before winter sets in. Thanks Texas.

However, we are still determined to find some outdoor fall to include in our studies. With the first days theme being seeds we decided that would be an easy inclusion. As it turns out, we only had to head out to the park to find some real life seeds that look just like our daily theme poster.

Having already discussed these in Circle Time we were excited to discover some that looked just like the poster. So, we set about exploring them. Preschool Science doesn’t have to be hard, it’s just a matter of exploring and playing with objects.

We chose one set of big seeds, a small set of tiny seeds and a leaf, then set about making different hypothesis and experiments.

Simple seed experiments we did –

Which one falls faster, rolls quicker, farther, floats in the wind better, rolls better…

We utilized the slide and examined the tree, felt the differences in the shapes and the hardness vs softness. Locating the tree they came from we walked over to a different tree to examine if there were seeds there and do they look the same?

These are certainly all things that don’t require Mother Goose Time to complete, but honestly I’m not sure it would have occurred to me to create this fun learning experience without it. Having a structured theme presented to me monthly has helped open my eyes to learning possibilities that I probably wouldn’t have noticed before. Without a background in early childhood education, I love having something to rely on to help me as a mama create a great well rounded learning environment for her.

I was so delighted when her 2 little friends got to the park and she proceeded to show them some of the things we had discovered about the seeds. I am so proud when I hear her using information that came from our schooling. I think yep, we did that together in our little homeschool. Win for the mom. And let’s be real, we can use all of the mom wins around.

Disclosure – We were so excited to be chosen as an official Mother Goose Time Blog Ambassador effective September 2018. As a blog ambassador I receive the curriculum in exchange for my honest feedback and experiences using the materials. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I hope that you are encouraged and inspired to try new things with the little ones in your life.
